Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport Parking Garage

Scope/Solutions

Maintained and operated by Milwaukee County, the original parking structure at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) was constructed in 1977, expanded in 1989, and expanded again in 2002. To plan for maintenance and repairs, the county wanted to develop a comprehensive asset management strategy with prioritized short-, mid-, and long-term repairs. SGH led a multidisciplinary team to assess the existing condition of the garage and recommend remedial work.

The garage offers parking for 9,400 vehicles and is a critical asset that supports the airport’s daily operations. With our team of consultants, SGH assessed the condition of the structures, including the post-tensioned concrete beams and one-way slabs, columns, spandrel panels, stair tower framing, miscellaneous steel elements, waterproofing, MEP systems, and the facade. Highlights of our work include:

  • Reviewing project documents and conducting a field investigation, including visual and sounding survey to identify and document deterioration
  • Performing petrographic analyses, chloride ion analysis, air entrainment assessment, and carbonation testing on extracted concrete samples in our laboratory
  • Developing repair recommendations and cost estimates to help the county plan for future work
