Gillette Stadium North End Zone
Scope/Solutions
Gillette Stadium, which is owned by The Kraft Group, has been home to the New England Patriots NFL team since its construction in the early 2000s. Continually seeking to improve the facility and fan experience, The Kraft Group undertook a project to expand the stadium’s north end zone. The project includes a re-envisioned entrance plaza and gate area, a new lighthouse tower with a 360-degree observation deck, a new glass-enclosed amenity space bridging between two club spaces, and one of the nation’s largest exterior high-definition video boards. SGH provided building enclosure consulting services for the north end zone expansion project and other prior projects at Gillette Stadium.
Working with Populous, SGH consulted on the design of terrace and plaza waterproofing, roofing, opaque exterior wall systems, curtain walls, tie-ins to the existing stadium, and expansion joints. Highlights of our work include:
- Reviewing the building enclosure design and developing details for the various building enclosure systems to integrate them with each other and the existing stadium
- Consulting on the building enclosure design for the lighthouse clad in precast concrete and topped with a glass-enclosed lantern surrounded by an observation terrace
- Helping develop details to integrate the amenity bridge’s sloped curtain wall with adjacent systems and designing expansion joints at each end where the enclosure meets the existing stadium structure
- Comparing properties for submitted building enclosure systems to those input in the project’s energy model
- Reviewing the wall construction and back-up waterproofing at the scoreboard
- Providing construction administration services, including reviewing contractor submittals, visiting the site to observe ongoing construction to compare with design intent, and helping the project team address field conditions
