A multi-building campus with a new seven-story hospital replaces the William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss. The new 125-bed hospital features a variety of building enclosure materials, including natural stone, metal panels, terra cotta rainscreens, and a unitized curtain wall system with sunshades. SGH consulted on the water resistive barrier and metal panel cladding during the project’s mockup phase and assisted with the design of numerous expansion joints during construction.

We collaborated with the joint venture, Clark-McCarthy Healthcare Partners II, and assisted them with aspects of the building enclosure design. Highlights of our work include the following:

Reviewed the water resistive barrier and metal panel system designs, and proposed detailing in the shop drawings prior to the performance mockup and recommended detailing to improve performance and constructability
Observed construction and testing of the exterior wall mockup and helped the construction team revise detailing to meet performance requirements
Performed laboratory testing on the water resistive barrier to help resolve concerns about the mockup’s performance
Visited the site to review the expansion joints and transitions, and collect related information from the contract documents and shop drawings
Reviewed project documents, photographs, and three-dimensional building information models to assess the existing field conditions of each expansion joint area
Developed conceptual drawing packages, including isometric sequencing details for each expansion joint area to depict and clarify how the waterproofing should be installed and integrated with adjacent assemblies
Consulted on the fire-resistance ratings along expansion joint openings at interconnected buildings
Reviewed expansion joint shop drawings and worked with the construction team to address field conditions
