Colby College Museum of Art, Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion

The Colby Museum of Art offers 38,000 sq ft of exhibition space within a building built over many decades. In 2007, Peter and Paula Lunder donated their personal art collection of over 500 works of art to the college. Needing space to house this remarkable collection, Colby College sought to build the Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion, named in recognition of a gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation and the partnership and friendship between Harold Alfond and Peter Lunder. SGH provided building enclosure consulting services for the 26,000 sq ft addition that includes 10,000 sq ft of exhibition space, studios, study and office space, and art storage.
The three-story addition, designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners (FFP) and constructed by Consigli Construction, is a glass-enclosed building that abuts two other buildings of the museum complex. FFP retained SGH to provide building enclosure consulting services for the project.
We consulted on the design of below-grade and above-grade waterproofing, roofing, curtain wall, and plaza waterproofing. The museum required a high-humidity environment to help preserve the artwork. Highlights of our work include the following:
- Assisted FFP with the building enclosure design, which included isolating the high-humidity interior spaces by limiting air and vapor transmission from these rooms in order to prevent conditioned air from reaching the glazing and condensing
- Developed building enclosure details to integrate the new addition with the walls and roofs of the adjacent buildings
- Provided isometric drawings showing construction sequences for complicated conditions where multiple walls and roofs converge
- Worked with the project team during construction to resolve unforeseen conditions at the existing buildings
