Clara Shortride Folz Criminal Justice Center

Scope/Solutions

The Clara Shortridge Folz Criminal Justice Center, located at 210 West Temple Street in Los Angeles, is a nineteen-story building with two basement levels originally constructed in the 1960s to 1970s. The concrete slab at the loading dock had deteriorated due to years of garbage collection and power washing.  SGH worked with Rutherford + Chekene, the prime consultant and structural engineer of record, on a project to replace the slab, add a floor drain at the loading dock, and provide a traffic-bearing waterproofing membrane. SGH served as designer of record for the waterproofing.

SGH reviewed the existing conditions and proposed repairs to meet the performance requirements and intended use. We subsequently designed and provided construction documents for the waterproofing replacement. Highlights of our work include:

  • Helping the owner evaluate waterproofing materials and long-term performance
  • Evaluating concrete core samples for surface contamination and recommending solutions compatible with the waterproofing
  • Developing repair details and technical specifications for the polymethyl methacrylate waterproofing application
  • Providing bid and construction phase services, including answering bidders’ questions, reviewing waterproofing submittals, consulting on mockups, providing part-time monitoring during installation, performing in situ quality control testing, and helping address field conditions
