Ritz-Carlton Chicago Renovation Project Named a CBC Merit Award Finalist
The Chicago Building Congress (CBC) recently recognized the renovation and redevelopment of the Ritz-Carlton Chicago hotel as a finalist in the organization’s 2020 Merit Awards program. CBC honored the project in the “Renovation & Adaptive Reuse over $15 million” category alongside other construction projects in the Chicagoland area at a virtual awards gala on 20 August 2020. Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) served as structural engineer for the project.
The project modernized the iconic Ritz-Carlton, situated on the 11th to 32nd floors of Water Tower Place. Newly refashioned lobbies, event spaces, dining offerings, and amenities required close coordination between the design and construction teams to minimize disruption and maximize available resources. New design features incorporated by the team include the “Flying Wave” floating lobby sculpture and soaring walnut fins that divide social areas. These changes required evaluating the existing structure and designing structural modifications to support the upgrades.
