Before the Storm: A Guide to Flood Emergency Response Planning

Before the Storm: A Guide to Flood Emergency Response Planning

In our time of increasingly frequent coastal and inland flooding, Flood Emergency Response Plans (FERPs) are a crucial aspect of flood-resistant design and construction. FERPs help building owners, operators, and occupants in flood-prone areas prepare for, respond to, and recover from damaging and costly flood events. Effective FERPs are valuable for all flood mitigation strategies and require planning, practice, and collaboration between numerous stakeholders. FERPs also define recovery procedures that minimize repairs and building downtime. In this webinar, we will outline the components of a reliable FERP and use case studies to illustrate approaches and considerations to effectively prepare for and respond to flood hazards for buildings and other structures.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the primary types of flooding and the key parameters of flood hazards.
  • Recognize the characteristics that make buildings and sites vulnerable to flooding.
  • Identify the process to develop Flood Emergency Response Plans for buildings.
  • Understand potential response and recovery strategies.

Participants will earn 1 AIA CES Learning Unit (LU/HSW) for attending the live webinar. Registration is free. Please note that space is limited – email events@sgh.com to join our waitlist if the session is closed when you register.

About the Speaker

Cory Brett
Cory Brett | Senior Project Manger

Cory Brett is a structural engineer with extensive experience designing, investigating, and rehabilitating many types of structures, including foundations and retaining walls, transportation-related structures, and buildings of all types. A significant portion of Cory’s practice includes performing specialized work related to evaluating flood hazards and designing structures to mitigate flood risk for buildings and sites.

Matthew Gilbertson
Matthew Gilbertson | Senior Technical Manager

Matt Gilbertson has diverse experience designing, investigating, and rehabilitating building and non-building structures. He specializes in evaluating flood hazards and designing structures to mitigate flood risk. His projects include designing buildings subject to flooding, evaluating existing facilities for flood risk, designing flood mitigation measures, and consulting on regulatory flood requirements. Matt is a member of Flood Load and Future Conditions subcommittees for ASCE 7-28, “Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures,” and the committee for ASCE 24-24, “Flood Resistant Design and Construction.”
