Demystifying the Fly-By Curtain Wall Parapet

A fly-by curtain wall parapet is a facade element that protrudes above the roof line, often functioning as both a railing and facade for amenity roof decks. These parapets require careful integration with the roofing assembly because they need to be airtight and watertight. During this webinar, we will describe the components of a fly-by curtain wall parapet and explain how it is different from typical curtain wall parapets. We will also define components and differences between a stick-built curtain wall and a unitized curtain wall system, which both may be used in a fly-by curtain wall parapet; describe options for tying roofing base flashing into curtain walls; and look at project examples to discuss lessons learned.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify the requirements of a parapet to function as a railing.
- Compare the differences between a stick-built curtain wall and a unitized curtain wall.
- Describe options for roofing base flashing tie-ins with the curtain wall to prevent air and water infiltration.
- Discuss the coordination efforts that take place between the designer, curtain wall manufacturer, curtain wall installer, and roofer during the design and construction administration phases of a project that includes a fly-by curtain wall parapet.
Participants will earn 1.0 AIA CES Learning Unit (LU/HSW) for attending the seminar. Registration is free. Please note that space is limited – email events@sgh.com to join our waitlist if the session is closed when you register.
