Experimental Basis of CFRP Renewal of PCCP
This paper presents the results of the experimental phase of a three year research program sponsored in part by Water Research Foundation (WRF) to form the experimental basis of an American Water Works Association (AWWA) Standard on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Renewal and Strengthening of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) that is being developed. The experimental program included full-scale three-edge bearing tests and hydrostatic pressure tests on CFRP-lined PCCP with simulated distress; laboratory testing of CFRP shear bond strength on steel substrate for use in the design of CFRP terminations; and laboratory testing of tensile and flexural ductility of different epoxies used in CFRP liners. A summary of the results of these experiments and their effect on the design, material, installation, and quality control provisions of the AWWA Standard are presented.
