University of California San Diego, Canyon Vista Marketplace
Scope/Solutions
UC San Diego saw an opportunity to redesign their existing dining hall in Warren College in a way that would better use the existing space and provide more food options for the students. The reinvented Canyon Vista Marketplace connects the dining commons, store, and student lounge areas. SGH provided fire life safety and accessibility code consulting services for the project.
The project included renovations to modernize the 1993 space by adding food service, updating indoor and outdoor seating areas, and providing a new interior stair to supplement the existing exterior one that connects the plaza level to the upper level of the marketplace.
The project team upgraded existing elements within the accessible travel path to accommodate persons with disabilities in accordance with the 2016 California Building Code. SGH evaluated exterior accessible elements within a path of travel and drop off areas, as well as select interior spaces and features.
SGH also reviewed project documents for general compliance with applicable fire and life safety codes and standards. Highlights of our work include the following:
- Providing guidance for meeting building code, fire protection, and life safety requirements
- Working with the university, the city, and design team to develop the fire access strategy
- Preparing egress code compliance diagrams, indicating egress route, occupant loads, egress width, and other relevant information
- Developing fire sprinkler and fire alarm design documents, including three-dimensional models, drawings, and specifications
