Understanding Building Envelope Interdependency
September 29, 2012
Architects designing exterior envelopes — including the walls and roofing assembly — are expected to produce building envelope designs that meet myriad criteria. This article reviews the different criteria and their interdependence and discuss how open lines of communications between the owner, designer, and contractor to define the goals of the building envelope, set realistic expectations for performance, guide the design, and inform the installation. Failure to communicate between the parties can lead to costly changes in construction, lack of exterior envelope performance, and repairs to the completed envelope.
