ASCE Honors Ben Kosbab with Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. Energy Award

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently recognized Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) Senior Principal Benjamin Kosbab with the Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. Energy Award. The award recognizes ASCE members who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the energy field in research, planning, design, and construction. With the award, ASCE thanked Ben for his “fundamental contributions to the deployment of mission-critical nuclear energy facilities in the United States, including large light water and advanced reactors, via analysis, design, construction, and probabilistic risk assessment, through consulting, basic and applied research, publications, and presentations.”

“I am very proud to see Ben honored with this prestigious award,” said Niklas Vigener, SGH Chief Technical Officer. “His dedication to advancing the energy field has made a meaningful impact, not only within our firm but across the industry. Ben exemplifies the innovation and technical excellence that drive progress in energy engineering, and this honor is a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding contributions.”

Ben is an industry leader for advanced nuclear facility design, emphasizing constructability, simplicity, standardization, and risk-informed criteria as core principles to support economical facility construction. He serves as SGH’s Engineering Mechanics and Infrastructure Division Head in Atlanta, GA. He also contributes actively to the industry, participating in several membership organizations and standards committees, including the ASCE Nuclear Standards Committee and Dynamic Analysis of Nuclear Structures Working Group, and the ASME/ANS Joint Committee on Nuclear Risk Management’s Technical Working Groups for Seismic and Non-Light Water Reactors.
