Managing 700 Miles of Transmission Mains

North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) provides treated water for over 2 million people in 80 communities through a system that includes nearly 700 mi of transmission mains. Reliable operation of these transmission mains requires proactive management; therefore, NTMWD developed a risk-based linear asset management plan that allows them to make informed decisions regarding budgeting and scheduling for maintenance and repairs. This paper presents NTMWD’s approach to developing their linear asset management plan, including outlining the agency’s goals, developing a framework, gathering data, and preliminary implementation results.
