280 Park Avenue

New York, NY

In the late 1950s, Bankers Trust Company planned a major headquarters building in midtown Manhattan. The company retained SGH to develop the technology for the precast-concrete exposed aggregate window frames that constitute the exterior walls. Construction of the original 400,000 square foot office building was completed in 1963. The exterior glass and concrete curtain wall is composed of 1,660 floor-to-ceiling windows of framed, precast concrete with exposed quartz aggregate. The AIA Guide to New York City describes the building as "a rare example of an industrial designer playing a major role in the design of a large building, most obvious in the very neat concrete curtain wall."
