California Academy of Science
San Francisco, CA
SGH provided building envelope design consulting and peer review of the structural design for the new California Academy of Sciences building, which was designed by Renzo Piano and local architects Stantec. We also peer reviewed the design of the structure on behalf of the City of San Francisco. The one-piece, topographically varied roof structure that interconnects the four gallery buildings was a unique challenge in the design. Our work included review of the structural engineer's complex analytical model of the structure, which involved nonlinear dynamic analysis, to demonstrate acceptable behavior despite predicted rocking of foundations under seismic loads.
