Beinecke Library, Yale University

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the library is a highly significant work of mid-20th century architecture. It is the university's principal repository for literary papers, early manuscripts, and rare books including a Gutenberg Bible. Temperature and humidity conditions in the exhibit space caused condensation on the first floor window wall and on the translucent marble panels in the upper stories, which also exhibited bowing, cracking, and surface erosion. The bronze curtain wall in the sunken marble court exhibited leakage problems since its original construction, and the original waterproofing system of the exterior granite plaza deteriorated and failed. SGH designed repairs to address moisture migration, curtain wall leakage, marble panel deterioration, and plaza defects.
